G4S is one of the world’s top, integrated security businesses, specializing in providing security and related services across six continents. The UK-based company is active in about 90 countries and with over 570,000 workers, it’s the biggest employer in the London Stock Exchange and has a secondary stock market record in Copenhagen.
With over 25 percent of its employees being veterans and a high number of present Reserve and National Guard employees, G4S was familiar with AMU. When company executives examined the overall cost and benefits to their employees, they consented to partner with AMU in 2017.

G4S Employee Joshua Rich Soon to Earn His Master Degree in Management
Joshua was promoted to Senior Manager, Training & Development in G4S, and he is currently finishing his master’s in management. He will be the second graduate in the AMU/G4S partnership as well as also the first graduate from a master’s program. Joshua made a decision to pursue a degree in management with organizational direction because his focus. He’s a firm believer in the adage,”Education is a lifelong journey.” After Joshua completed his undergraduate studies, he felt prepared to undertake job opportunities head-on, but a particular degree of work expertise was often needed for some of the roles he desired.
Joshua says,”I’d gained career expertise, but I felt the need to find out some additional educational theory behind handling best practices. I decided to pursue a master’s degree in management with leadership. I thought this degree would provide the ideal balance of educational concept with a blueprint for practical application to my current role and continuing career ambitions.”
As the senior director of training and development, Joshua’s responsibilities include assessing training requirements, developing customized curricula, conducting training seminars, easing virtual instructor-led training certificates, proposal support, and writing/editing publications to encourage learning and development. Additionally, he’s the training center coordinator for G4S Secure Solutions (USA)’s First Aid, CPR and AED training program. He provides support and advice to instructors within the business’s area offices and national headquarters.
Joshua was motivated to start his career in coaching and development on account of the mentors he’d at every stage of his career. He notes”Admittedly, I didn’t necessarily grasp the lessons my mentors were sharing at the moment, but in retrospect, I have a better understanding now. While I think most of us possess potential for greatness, that possible can go untapped without the proper tools and opportunities. Teachers and trainers made a difference in my own life. I wanted that chance to do the same for someone else.”
The Importance of Embracing the Career Journey
Joshua’s advice to others is to adopt the career journey. His career path was unconventional; he started as a high school substitute teacher and later transitioned into the private security industry. The security company he worked for had a job opening for a coach and wanted someone who had previous teaching experience.
Joshua says,”I applied for the job along with also my career path seemed to spark from there forward. Without that perspective, I wouldn’t be relatable to individuals who are starting their careers or making career changes. Those experiences have helped me to become more in tune to the advantages of the training and professional development opportunities”
Joshua also notes that the knowledge he acquired for his master’s degree has been useful. Althoughhe knew his direction level was relevant, originally, he was not certain how his degree will fully translate into his day-to-day duties. But after finishing his first course, the correlations between his profession and AMU coursework were obvious.
Afterward, Joshua shared he was able to look at projects and staff meetings via a different direction lens; he developed a better comprehension of the rationale behind lots of the management policies and processes. With this newfound knowledge, he recommended ideas that were in alignment, with business best practices, and forward thinking.

Joshua says,”She’s an extraordinary admissions adviser and counselor to talk with because I had been quite transparent about my apprehension to taking classes on the web. At the time, I was a new father and working fulltime; I didn’t have money to experiment for education. She provided a thorough summary of how AMU’s program would work with my schedule and the expectations that the university would have of me in turn.
“Everything Kim shared that day has come to fruition; the professors have been good to learn and my interactions with classmates has been tremendously beneficial. I quickly realized that many students are juggling heavy workloads and personal responsibilities. We’re all pushing towards finishing the program and advancing our respective careers.”
At present, Joshua is working towards the completion and publication of his first book by 2019. The publication highlights the benefits of training programs in K-12, college and career preferences. Additionally, the book investigates how a organization’s focus on corporate social responsibility may subsequently have a environmental domino effect upon enhancing employee and student retention prices.
